Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are proving to be almost as beneficial to health as riding conventional bicycles, according to a new study by the Hannover Medical School.
This finding could play a vital role for people with health restrictions, as pedelec riding is perceived as less strenuous but still offers significant health benefits.
The extensive study analyzed the heart rate and other health data of e-bike users and conventional cyclists.
The study showed that the heart rate of e-bike riders differs only minimally from that of cyclists, indicating similar positive effects on the cardiovascular system.
Around 35 percent of the study participants in the e-bike group had a history of health problems.
The results revealed that regular e-bike riding can lead to a significant reduction in blood pressure.
Although the participants in this group were older and had a higher body mass, they spent an average of 135 minutes per week on the bike.
This regular physical activity not only increased their fitness but also played a preventative role against conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, with the risk of these diseases being reduced by 20 to 40 percent.
However, the researchers also emphasize the need for safety measures, as the number of accidents among e-bike users has increased in recent years.
They therefore recommend that new e-bike users, in particular, should receive an introduction to safe bike handling and practice in a safe environment.
